churchill square shopping centre guide brighton

Churchill Square is Brighton’s main covered shopping centre, with more than 60 shops and services, IKEA Brighton, places to eat and two attached multi-storey car parks.

Standing on Western Road in the heart of the city, it is within walking distance of Brighton Station, the seafront, the Clock Tower and The Lanes. Buses from many parts of Brighton and Hove also stop immediately outside.

The mix is dominated by national and international retailers, including Apple, H&M, Zara, Next, LEGO and HMV, but Churchill Square has changed noticeably in recent years. IKEA opened in the former Debenhams store in 2025, H&M introduced its HOME range to Brighton in 2026 and the Local Hero concept has provided short-term space for changing independent businesses.

This guide covers the current shops, opening hours, food and drink, parking prices, IKEA Click and Collect, buses, accessibility and the practical information worth checking before making a journey into central Brighton for the Churchill Square Shopping Centre.

IKEA Brighton at Churchill Square

IKEA Brighton opened on 14 August 2025 in the former Debenhams premises, bringing a very different type of IKEA store into the middle of the city.

The two-storey store covers 6,695 square metres and carries a selected range of home accessories, smaller furniture and other products that shoppers can buy and take away immediately.

It also has planning services for larger home projects, a Re-Shop and Re-use area, Swedish food and a restaurant. The wider IKEA range remains available to order, which is important because the Brighton branch does not work like a traditional out-of-town IKEA with a large warehouse and surface car park attached.

How does IKEA Brighton work for larger furniture?

Customers do not have to carry a wardrobe, sofa or other large purchase through central Brighton.

Products available in the city-centre store can be bought and taken home immediately. Larger items and products from IKEA’s wider range can instead be ordered for home delivery or Click and Collect.

IKEA Brighton’s Click and Collect point is on Level P2 of Churchill Square’s Red Car Park. Drivers should enter the Red Car Park from Regency Road East, BN1 2RU, and follow the IKEA markings to the collection point.

IKEA’s Brighton store information currently states that customers collecting an order have 40 minutes’ free parking. This is separate from Churchill Square’s normal parking tariff.

People arriving without a car can also reach the collection point on foot from inside Churchill Square. Follow the route towards the main IKEA entrance, then use the lift to reach Level 2 of the Red Car Park and follow the marked pedestrian route.

Current IKEA Brighton store, restaurant and Click and Collect hours are available on the IKEA Brighton store page.

H&M HOME in Brighton

H&M opened its relocated Churchill Square store on 19 March 2026.

The store combines womenswear, menswear, childrenswear and beauty with H&M HOME, bringing the retailer’s homeware range to Brighton for the first time.

Local Hero and changing independent shops

Churchill Square introduced Local Hero in 2025.

Rather than being one permanent shop, Local Hero is a flexible fitted retail space intended for independent and emerging businesses to use for limited periods. The occupant can therefore change, making it worth checking what is currently trading there before visiting specifically for the pop-up.

Where can you eat at Churchill Square?

Churchill Square has cafés, takeaway counters and places to eat across the shopping centre, including a food-court area and IKEA’s own restaurant.

The Churchill Square food and drink directory includes businesses such as Auntie Anne’s, Boost Juice Bars, Bubble Ci.Tea, Costa Coffee, Greekatessen, Italian Kitchen, Krispy Kreme, McDonald’s, Millie’s Cookies, NoodleStop and Trading Post Coffee Roasters.

The food options are spread across different parts of the centre. The Food Quarter is upstairs, while Greekatessen trades on the outside piazza. IKEA’s Swedish Deli provides another option inside the store, with IKEA highlighting its sea views.

For an evening food stop, check the restaurant rather than the shopping-centre closing time. IKEA currently lists its restaurant as closing at 7pm Monday to Saturday and 4pm on Sunday, an hour before the store. Check the IKEA Brighton restaurant hours before setting out specifically to eat.

There are also many more places to eat within a few minutes’ walk. Western Road, Preston Street, The Lanes and North Laine all have independent cafés, pubs, restaurants and takeaways, so shoppers are not limited to eating inside the centre.

The centre extended its Monday-to-Saturday closing time to 8pm from 1 September 2025, shortly after IKEA Brighton opened.

These are centre hours rather than a guarantee that every business will be open. Shops, restaurants and services can use different times, while bank holidays, Christmas and other seasonal periods can also bring changes.

Check the current Churchill Square opening hours and the individual retailer before making a special journey.

How much is parking at Churchill Square?

Churchill Square has two attached multi-storey car parks, but parking in the city centre is expensive. A two-hour stay currently costs £6.50, while a visit lasting four to six hours costs £20.

Some drivers find the spaces tight

Some visitors find Churchill Square’s parking bays tight. Take care when manoeuvring and check you have enough room to open the doors and get in and out comfortably before settling on a space.

How to get to Churchill Square

Churchill Square is on Western Road in central Brighton, close to the Clock Tower and the junction with North Street.

Walking from Brighton Station

Churchill Square is around a 10-minute walk from Brighton Station.

Leave through the main station entrance and follow Queens Road downhill towards the Clock Tower. At the Clock Tower, turn right towards Western Road. Churchill Square is a short distance ahead.

The outward walk is predominantly downhill, which means the return to Brighton Station is uphill. That is worth bearing in mind for visitors with limited mobility or heavy shopping.

Which buses stop at Churchill Square?

For many Brighton and Hove residents, the bus is one of the easiest ways to reach Churchill Square, particularly given the cost of city-centre parking.

Stops C1 to C8 are immediately outside or alongside the shopping centre. Direct services connect Churchill Square with areas including Patcham, Hangleton, Portslade, Mile Oak, Woodingdean, Hollingbury, Moulsecoomb, Bevendean, Whitehawk and the Marina.

Routes, stops and temporary diversions can change, so check current Brighton & Hove Buses information before travelling.

Can you cycle to Churchill Square?

Yes. Churchill Square provides cycle parking on the piazza outside the shopping centre, making cycling an option for visitors who want to avoid city-centre parking charges.

The centre currently lists cycle stands on the piazza by Soletrader and next to iSmash.

Brighton has a wider network of cycle routes, but the streets immediately around Churchill Square are busy with buses, taxis, deliveries and pedestrians. Cyclists unfamiliar with central Brighton should check a current cycle route planner rather than assume the most direct road route will also be the easiest.

Where can I park my bike at Churchill Square?

Churchill Square’s official visitor information lists bike stands on the piazza, including stands by Soletrader and next to iSmash.

Cycle parking is outside the shopping centre rather than within the Red or Green multi-storey car parks. Cyclists should bring their own lock and secure the frame and wheels where possible.

Is motorcycle parking free at Churchill Square?

Yes. Churchill Square currently provides free motorcycle parking in the Churchill 2 Green Car Park. Motorcyclists enter around the barrier and follow the signs to the designated parking area.

Toilets, baby changing and visiting with children

Churchill Square’s baby-changing facilities are between Pandora and Clarks. Further facilities are available upstairs in the Food Quarter, beside Italian Kitchen.

The centre also provides a buggy park in the corridor between Clarks and Pandora. Families using a pram should check the access information below before planning a route between floors, particularly during lift works.

For children who find shoe shopping overwhelming, Clarks offers Quiet Time appointments. Contact the store about availability and arrangements. This is a Clarks service, not a centre-wide quiet shopping period.

Accessibility at Churchill Square

Churchill Square provides step-free routes through the centre, accessible parking and mobility support.

Shopmobility is based on Level 3 of the Red Car Park and supports visitors who use wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Wheelchairs are also available for hire.

Anyone who needs to arrange mobility equipment or confirm a particular step-free route should check the centre’s current mobility services information before travelling.

Changing Places toilet

Churchill Square has a Changing Places toilet with a ceiling hoist, changing bench and height-adjustable basin. This provides additional equipment beyond a standard accessible toilet.

Consult the Churchill Square Changing Places listing and contact the centre to confirm the current access arrangements and equipment availability when planning your visit.

Lift and escalator work during 2026

Churchill Square announced in January 2026 that its central escalators had reached the end of their working life and were being replaced.

In the latest detailed access update located for this guide, published on , the centre also said work was taking place to replace the single central scenic lift with two new lifts.

That update said Churchill Square remained fully open and identified alternative step-free routes from the Lower Mall through the car park behind The Entertainer, from the Upper Mall through the car park near IKEA and from the food court near the toilets.

Accessibility during improvement work

Check the latest route before travelling

The latest detailed official update located for this guide was published in April 2026. Visitors with specific mobility requirements should check current centre guidance rather than assume temporary routes remain unchanged.

Brighton shopping guide comparing Churchill Square, The Lanes, North Laine and Western Road by the shops, food and experiences each area offers.
Brighton’s central shopping areas have distinct identities: Churchill Square for national brands and technology, The Lanes for jewellery, boutiques and restaurants, North Laine for vintage and independent shops, and Western Road for a mixture of high-street retail, independents and food

Is Churchill Square close to The Lanes and North Laine?

Yes. One advantage of Churchill Square’s central location is that it can easily be combined with Brighton’s other main shopping areas.

Walk east towards North Street and The Lanes and the retail mix quickly changes from large chains to jewellery businesses, smaller shops, restaurants and the area’s narrow historic passages.

North Laine is a little further north-east and has a particularly strong concentration of independent shops, vintage clothing, records, books, specialist businesses and cafés.

Western Road runs west from Churchill Square towards Hove, providing another long stretch of shops, cafés, restaurants and services.

Is Churchill Square Shopping Centre being redeveloped?

Work has been taking place inside the existing shopping centre, but that should not be confused with a confirmed wholesale redevelopment of Churchill Square.

Recent changes have included IKEA, the relocated H&M store, Local Hero, longer opening hours and work on lifts and escalators.

Churchill Square has also featured in much larger long-term proposals for this part of Brighton. Brighton & Hove City Council’s Waterfront Project has considered redevelopment of the Brighton Centre site and an extension alongside a replacement conference and entertainment venue.

Those proposals should not be read as a confirmed timetable for demolishing or comprehensively rebuilding the existing shopping centre. No final timetable for a wholesale redevelopment had been published when this guide was checked.
