What is Harriet Kemsley: Floozy about?
Floozy is Kemsley’s new full-length stand-up show and takes as its starting point an unfamiliar problem for a comedian whose material has often drawn on chaos, anxiety and things going wrong: what happens when life begins to go well?
The announced material covers dating, mushrooms and Kemsley’s attempts to become, in the deliberately playful language of the title, “a bit of a floozy”.
The show follows an Edinburgh Festival Fringe work-in-progress run and forms part of a national tour beginning in Reading in September before travelling around England, Scotland and Wales.
The Brighton performances come early in that tour, after dates in Reading, London, Oxford and Canterbury. Demand has already led to additional matinees in several cities, including Brighton, Reading, Norwich and Manchester.
Who is Harriet Kemsley?
Kemsley is a stand-up comedian, writer and actress whose career spans live comedy, television and radio.
She has appeared on programmes including Hypothetical, 8 Out of 10 Cats, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and Comedy Central’s Roast Battle. She also co-created and co-wrote the Viceland series Bobby & Harriet Get Married.
More recently, she appeared in Amazon Prime Video’s Last One Laughing UK, putting her in front of a broader television audience before returning to the longer format of a solo stand-up tour.
Her previous Edinburgh shows have included Slutty Joan and Honeysuckle Island, while her career has also included recognition on the new-act circuit.
Kemsley also has an earlier connection with Sussex comedy. She won Brighton Comedy Festival New Act of the Year in 2012, making the return to Brighton a notable stop in a career which has moved from new-act competitions to national touring and television.
A return to Brighton with two shows in one day
The Brighton date is at The Forge Comedy Club inside Ironworks Studios on Cheapside.
The venue has become a regular stop for touring stand-up and says it has hosted comedians including Romesh Ranganathan, Russell Kane, Sara Pascoe, Zoe Lyons, Jen Brister, Alan Carr, Maisie Adam, Suzi Ruffell and Mo Gilligan.
The Forge was named Chortle’s Best Comedy Venue in 2024 and Best Pro Comedy Night in the South in 2023.
Kemsley’s evening performance is listed as sold out, with the extra 4pm show giving Brighton audiences another opportunity to see Floozy on the same day.
